Athletes are often asked to be leaders both on and off the field and yet we rarely support them directly on how to take on a leadership role. As a result, the Somers Athlete Leadership Training (SALT) program was initiated the fall of 2011. This program is specifically geared for the student-athlete to prepare him or her for excellence in both sport and life after school.   Participants will explore important character principles with the intent to equip and empower them to develop healthy character-based leadership skills that will positively impact their life. Currently the program is delivered on a bi-weekly basis for a semester by our superintendent. Athletes are recommended by coaching staff of the sport they participate in and typically two student-athletes are identified by each coach.   

The SALT curriculum is designed around the District Strategic Vision and the development of the whole child – emphasis is on the social, emotional and character development of the student-athlete.  The students are active in the learning process and participate in a broad variety of experiences. The SALT curriculum challenges the students to explore their own leadership style and development. We strive to create a nurturing and safe class atmosphere to allow this development to take place.  

A select number of students from the first group of SALT graduates will form the Tuskers Student Athlete Council. The mission of the TSAC is to increase sportsmanship, school spirit and overall program improvement for their fellow athletes. The members of the TSAC will strive to be ambassadors of the Tuskers Athletic Department and their representative sport.
